Abstract:
Many studies have found a link between time spent using social media and mental health issues, such as depression and anxiety. However, the existing research is plagued by cross-sectional research and lacks analytic techniques examining individual change over time. The current research involves an 8-year longitudinal study examining the association between time spent using social media and depression and anxiety at the intra-individual level. Participants included 500 adolescents who completed once-yearly questionnaires between the ages of 13 and 20. Results revealed that increased time spent on social media was not associated with increased mental health issues across development when examined at the individual level. Hopefully these results can move the field of research beyond its past focus on screen time.

The Synthesis Essay Assignment
Whereas in the Rhetorical Essay you analyzed the techniques and tools the author used to make an argument, a synthesis essay looks at the essay’s argument and asks you to form an opinion by making connections between the essay and research. In order to form an opinion, you will read one of the essays provided and two outside/research sources on that topic. Then, you will form your own opinion about the topic and state that in a thesis (without using “I”).
Your main question is the following:
The rest of the paper will use examples and quotes from the essay you read and your two chosen sources.
Requirements: 3-5 pages (750 – 1200 words) + works cited page (the works cited page is not included in the 3 page requirement).
Topic: Explain the topic to readers, analyze the essays in terms of its reliability, and offer your opinion of the topic at the end
Audience: your are writing for an academic audience of professors and fellow students.
Research: Two research resources; at least one must be from Galileo. You may use another reliable resource if you want. Make sure to have a Works Cited page with your sources AND the essay itself.
Other considerations:
Step by Step
Here is a suggested process for writing your essay:
Structure of the Paper
Introduction
The introduction of the paper should state the essay’s title and author and give a brief summary of what it says. This should be about 4-5 sentences, definitely not more than 1/2 of the page.
Thesis
The thesis will state whether or not you are supporting or disputing the main argument of the essay.
Example thesis from an essay that argues against solitary confinement:
Many experts agree that solitary confinement is inhumane and should be discontinued.
Notice that the thesis states that the paper will be about the articles.
Body Paragraphs
Each paragraph will discuss one of the main points of the essays and explain why it is valid (if you are supporting) or not valid (if you are disputing). All paragraphs will also have research. All of them must have specific examples from the essay you are writing about.
Conclusion
The conclusion wraps up everything and should mention again the essay and your overall support or dispute of the idea.
