Researchers working on mock criminal cases found an “attraction-leniency effect” on legal decision making by showing that attractive criminal suspects were less likely to be convicted and were given less severe punishments than their unattractive counterparts. Your task will be to replicate these studies based on the attractiveness of the defendant’s personality. Your task: • Students will create a survey using Qualtrics with your TA. This will be done as a group during recitation. • Each student will get the survey filled out by 4 participants. ▪ Each participant will serve in each condition: positive personality and years in prison AND negative personality and years in prison (repeated measures correlated t test) • Each student will write a short review of literature in relation to factors affecting jury decisions (2-3 pages recommended). • Each student will create a null and alternative hypothesis based on the provided variables. The hypothesis can either be directional or non-directional. • Each student will report and analyze the results of the Jury Study which will be emailed by your TA. Excel can be used for the required stats below. (1 page recommended) o Descriptive stats: mean, median, mode, range, standard deviation o Inferential stats: correlated t test o In addition, each student will show results graphically based on chapter 9 in the text • Each student will write a short discussion section which should focus on explaining and evaluating what you found, showing how it relates to your literature review and research questions, and making an argument in support of your overall conclusion. (1 page recommended) • Variables o IV ▪ 2 Levels • Positive/negative personality • The conditions will be discussed in recitation with your TA o DV ▪ Years of imprisonment 1. APA format should be used for the title page, in text citations, appendices, and a reference page. 2.
