A primary goal of a behavioral skills assessment is to determine whether the lack of occurrence of a specific behavior is due to a skill deficit (i.e. the behavior is not under appropriate stimulus control) or due to a motivational issue (i.e., the behavior is in the individual’s repertoire, but the current reinforcement contingencies are not setting the occasion for the behavior to occur).
Describe a behavior that could be targeted for an increase either due to a skill deficit or a motivational issue.
Propose assessment procedures that could help determine whether the situation is former or the latter.
