I think one big change in my community that hit close to home was we had a major paper mill here that my dad had worked at for about 20 years and out of no where they sold the company and the new owners shut the mill down. About 40 minutes down the road they had a mill that they upgraded and made bigger to take on some of the work load from the mill they shut down to compact everything into one plant. It took a toll on my family as well as many others in the community as it was the work place of a little over 300 people in the small community I live in. They did however give them their pension and pay for them all to go back to school to learn a new trait. I would also say in local public education one huge difference I have seen technology wise that has been a big change to me is how our kids use tablets to learn. While the teacher in my sons class has half the class doing hands on learning another group will be at their desk with tablets doing activities to learn. When I was a kid the teacher taught us all at once on a chalk board or projector and we didn’t use computers much. I think the mill closing was a positive effect because my dad was able to go to school and get a degree in a field that wasn’t so physically demanding so at his age he isn’t killing his body daily at work and he still ended up with his retirement from there as well as his new place of business. I think the education technology change helps because it allows the teacher to be more hands on with a small group instead of a large group but it’s also negative because it teaches our kids to rely on technology to much and always wanting to be on electronics.

DISCUSSION POST #2

Good evening,

In order for me to be able to determine if globalization has changed my community, I must first define what it is. According to globalization101, it is a process driven by international trade and investment. It can also be described as more than just getting things from a different nation but getting it from them at a lower cost in a quicker time. Having a Wal-Mart in my neighborhood has introduced globalization in the neighborhood and throughout the nation. To add to this, Probe.org has stated there is at least one Wal-Mart for every county in the United States. The only problem with this number is that it was from April of 2006.

Wal-Mart has brought food items that are not native to other countries. For example, Atlantic salmon is not native to the country of Chile but it is being farmed there to be sold by Wal-Mart. I am not saying it is a bad thing but it could introduce things that may not be the most favorable thing. Added an animal of any type can destroy an ecosystem.
