Let’s remind ourselves what inductive is! Go from specific observations about a topic or question to a final claim at the end. Use sources to help propel yourself through the discussion. Take the reader through your thought process, and through your sources, and your response to those sources. In the introduction, try to find a way to make your initial (i.e beginning) question/issue seem controversial, relevant to the reader and/or surprising or new. (Kairos, remember?) Writing Assignment: “Putting in Your Oar”: SYNTHESIZING and RESPONDING to at least four sources (in INDUCTIVE format) This assignment is in INDUCTIVE form, and, when you are done, yours may be used as a blueprint for your final paper if you are doing an inductive paper. In other words, it could be fairly easily expanded into a final (Inductive) paper. Therefore, if you are planning to take an inductive approach to your paper, you should work as hard as you can on this assignment — because the better it is, the easier your final paper will be! Here are some things to consider: Now that your initial research has been done, you are exploring the broader academic conversation around your topic. You have directed or re-directed your central question to meet four criteria: 1) Your central question clearly relates to the sources you have found; 2) Your central question (and the broader topic around it) is interesting to your audience (this class and your professor) – or you can make find a way to make it interesting; 3) Your central question is asked and discussed in the context of a wider academic “conversation” that includes multiple “arguments” and perspectives; 4) Your central question will be answered in your paper via your position statement. The position statement may be approached in various ways, as we have discussed. In this assignment, you are leading up to your position INDUCTIVELY. For this assignment, you need to use four sources that relate to your central question. (why can’t college tuition be free). Summarize, “synthesize,” and/or intertwine each one of these sources, relating them to the “conversation” about your topic – and responding to them. At the end of the piece you should clearly establish your own position, in relationship to the sources you mention in the paper. At the end of your paper, list citations for the four sources you mention in a Works Cited page. Note: This assignment SHOULD reflect the main position you will be taking in your final paper. ( my position is that College tuition should be free). It must also show a point of view on the articles you mention. As I said above, if you do the assignment well, you will actually end up with a short inductive blueprint for your paper that you can easily expand into an eight-to-ten page, inductive paper.
