ANTHROPOLOGY STUDY CASE

The scope of the case encompasses the main issues, which are trust and lack of understanding. The case involves a misunderstanding that arises when two parties do not agree due to the lack of a common background. The lack of this shared background hinders the understanding between the parties; therefore, each does not understand clearly, what the other party needs[1]. According to the context, Joe and Mae do not clearly understand the cultural background and the norms practised in the Caribbean. Ildete follows and perceives her actions and those of the missionaries on the Caribbean perspective, while the couple acts according to the American aspect. Ironically, a dispute arises, after each party tries to do good for the other. Ildete is devoted to carrying out her chores in perfection while getting a standard payment for a year. At the end of her service, the missionary couple decides to appreciate and reward her by giving extra cash. Contrary, to their expectation, the lady feels disappointed since she perceives that they have been stealing from her. And the appreciation amount must have been part of what they had been paying her for the past year.

Understandably, each party acted according to their school of thoughts. There is a need for an intervention to clear the dilemma and the tension that resulted from the case. The best way of intervening and finding a solution would be through arbitration, where an arbitrator tends to explain the reasons for the actions by each party, to the other group[2]. With such an intervention, there will be diversified reasoning and understanding of each other’s background setting with a justification for their actions. Cultural intelligence is crucial for community development without any conflicts.
